Product costs (COGS) are one of the major costs associated with any Ecommerce business. This guide walks you through different ways you can configure COGS in OrderMetrics
Sync COGS directly from your sales channel (only available for Shopify and BigCommerce)
Sync COGS at the order level from AliExpress (for dropshipping businesses)
Manually enter COGS for individual SKUs
Bulk upload COGS for multiple SKUs
Configure COGS as a percentage of sale price (Estimated COGS)
If you have not configured COGS using any of the above methods, OrderMetrics will use estimated COGS for all products. By default, if a real COGS value is missing, we will assume the COGS for a product as 50% of its selling price.
1. Sync COGS directly from your sales channel (only available for Shopify and BigCommerce)
If you have already configured COGS in your sales channel, OrderMetrics will pull these values automatically at the product level. This feature is currently only available for Shopify and BigCommerce storefronts.
To enable this feature, head over to Data Warehouse > COGS Data and select the following checkbox:
When this feature is enabled, OrderMetrics will automatically populate COGS for products where it finds them in Shopify/BigCommerce. If that is the case, you will not be able to manually edit the values in OrderMetrics. Any changes will need to be made in Shopify/BigCommerce.
2. Sync COGS at the order level from AliExpress (for dropshipping businesses)
OrderMetrics allows you to import your product and shipping costs for orders that are dropshipped from AliExpress. This integration is only available in the Pro plan.
Learn more about setting up AliExpress in our guide here
3. Manually enter COGS for individual SKUs
Go to Data Warehouse > COGS data to manually enter COGS in OrderMetrics.
If a product has multiple variants, you can click on the + sign to the left of the product name to expand all variants:
4. Bulk upload COGS for multiple SKUs
OrderMetrics allows you to import COGS for multiple products/SKUs using a spreadsheet file. To get started, download the COGS template file by clicking on “Download Template”.
This will download a spreadsheet file which you can edit in Microsoft Excel or any other spreadsheet software
Next, enter the COGS for each SKU you wish to update in the “goods_cost” column. Once done, save the file as is and upload it back to OrderMetrics by clicking on “Upload Template”
5. Configure COGS as a percentage of sale price (Estimated COGS)
You can also configure COGS for all products as a percentage of the sale price. This is known as Estimated COGS. To use this feature, set the slider to your desired percentage
Note that estimated COGS are assigned the lowest priority when calculating COGS. This means if actual COGS values are present for a product, we will use those first instead of estimated values.
Can I manage historical COGS if my vendor costs change?
Yes you can! These can be managed under Data warehouse -> COGS data by clicking the "Manage Historical COGS" button to the right of a product or variant.
You can then manage costs by date range
Can I override COGS for an order?
Yes, you can do this by heading to the Profit Dashboard and scrolling down to the "Order Data" table and clicking on a COGS cell.
